DEAR MOM

In Dear Mom, Heloísa (Letícia Sabatella) is a doctor suffering from chronic unhappiness, struggling to deal with both her husband (Marat Descartes) and her mother (Selma Egrei), whom she constantly accuses of favoring her sister, Beth. After getting a divorce from her husband, Heloísa meets Leda, a painter who was injured in a car accident and is being treated at the hospital where she works. Grateful for the care she received, Leda wishes to paint a portrait of Heloísa. Initially hesitant, she eventually agrees, and upon visiting Leda’s studio, the two become romantically involved. However, even though this new relationship brings her happiness, Heloísa has to face prejudice from both her mother and her own daughter.

Ruth cannot find harmony with her rebellious daughter, Helô.

Helô blames Ruth for her failures, believing she was neglected and that her mother prioritized her sister, Beth, over her.

They’ve got serious communication issues — Ruth feels sorry for her daughter’s unhappiness, but Helô underestimates her mother’s life experience.

However, Ruth’s perfect image is shattered when she confesses she once had an affair. This revelation humanizes both mother and daughter, especially when Helô finds out that Ruth has cancer. Gradually, they set their resentment aside, uncovering a generosity that makes their love more transparent.

By adapting the hit play by Maria Adelaide Amaral, the film expands the narrative, using visuals to complement the text, allowing the audience to follow the events through the characters’ perspectives.
